UK Skilled Worker English B2 Requirement 2026: IELTS, Ecctis and Evidence for African Applicants

Before paying for an English test, establish which UK Skilled Worker rule applies to your application and whether you already hold acceptable evidence. An English-taught degree, an ordinary course certificate and an approved visa test are different documents.

Consider two fictional Tanzanian accountants: Asha is preparing her first Skilled Worker application, while Daniel has qualifying Skilled Worker permission dating from before 8 January 2026 and is extending on the same route. They should check their own immigration history rather than assume the same test booking fits both cases.

Identify B2 or the applicable transition first

The Home Office's Skilled Worker caseworker guidance says B2 applies under the rules from 8 January 2026 where the applicant's most recent grant was not Skilled Worker permission subject to B1. B1 remains relevant under the earlier rules or where the most recent Skilled Worker grant was subject to that standard. The required level covers reading, writing, speaking and listening.

For Asha's initial application, the starting point is B2. Daniel should check his latest grant and the extension conditions before assuming he needs a new test. Having once visited or studied in the UK does not itself establish the Skilled Worker transition.

The official table of English requirement levels is useful when comparing routes. A switch from another route needs its own check; do not carry over the old route's language level without examining the current requirements.

Choose the evidence route that fits your circumstances

Possible evidence What to verify
Qualifying UK school or degree evidence Whether the qualification satisfies the published conditions and the evidence is available.
Overseas English-taught degree The required Ecctis assessment, qualification equivalence and English-medium confirmation.
Approved English test Exact test product, required components, approved location and valid result.
Previous successful application Whether English was already established at the level required now.
Nationality or professional provision Whether a specific published exception applies to the applicant and sponsored role.

The GOV.UK applicant guide explains these evidence routes. A non-UK awarded degree taught in English needs the relevant Ecctis assessment. A university's medium-of-instruction letter may support that process, but should not be treated as a substitute for the required assessment.

Prepare your award certificate, transcript and the information requested by Ecctis. Check the service purpose before ordering: general qualification comparison and visa English evidence are not interchangeable. Keep the resulting reference or code and make sure names and qualification details match your application records.

Four checks for UK English evidence: route, evidence, verification and review

If you need IELTS or another test, book the approved product

“IELTS” is a provider-associated name, not proof that any test carrying it meets your visa requirement. Use the Home Office's current Secure English Language Test guidance to check the exact approved test and centre. The official guidance was updated on 2 November 2026; check its current provider and centre lists rather than an old agent’s screenshot.

Confirm all four skills are covered at the required level. Ask the provider how identity details must appear and what reference you will receive. Check the result timing against your planned application date before paying. The Immigration Rules Appendix English Language sets out the test evidence and validity conditions; it generally requires an approved test in the two years before application, while previous-successful-application provisions need a separate check.

Check previous evidence and professional provisions carefully

Appendix English Language allows reliance on a previous successful application where the requirement was met at the level needed for the current application. A previous B1 result does not automatically establish B2. Retain the earlier decision and evidence instead of relying only on recollection.

The rules also contain a specific provision for sponsored doctors, dentists, nurses, midwives and veterinarians who passed an English assessment accepted by the relevant professional body for registration. Do not extend that provision to every regulated occupation. Where your history is complex, obtain advice from an appropriately authorised immigration adviser.

Assemble a final evidence checklist

  • Record the route, application type and intended submission date.
  • Check your latest immigration grant and whether a transition applies.
  • Select one valid evidence route and list its required documents.
  • Check identity details and keep the test or assessment reference.
  • Revisit the official rules immediately before submission.

English evidence addresses only one part of eligibility. Sponsorship, the job, pay and other immigration conditions need separate checks. Continue with our UK sponsor-verification guide when checking an offer.

Prepare an application you can explain. Explore HumanValue CV and LinkedIn support for presenting your professional evidence. The HumanValue Learning Center can support workplace communication, but its general courses do not replace an approved visa English test or guarantee a visa.

Frequently asked questions

Does every Tanzanian applicant need to book IELTS?

No. Identify the evidence route that fits your qualifications and immigration history. A qualifying degree assessment, previous evidence or another published provision may apply. Do not book a test simply because someone used it for a different route.

Is a university medium-of-instruction letter enough?

For a qualifying non-UK degree, the official applicant guide requires the relevant Ecctis assessment. Collect the university documents requested for that assessment, and check that the service is intended for your visa evidence purpose.

Does a B2 result mean my visa will be approved?

No. English evidence is one part of the application. The sponsor, role, pay, identity documents and other conditions must also be checked under the rules applying when you submit.

Can a workplace communication course replace a visa test?

No. General communication practice and career support are different from approved immigration evidence. Use the official test list where a SELT is required.

What should I do before paying for a test or assessment?

Write down your route, application type, required level, accepted evidence, identity details and intended submission date. Confirm the product and location through the official source and provider, then keep the booking and result references private.

Practical next step for African professionals

Create a one-page evidence tracker with columns for requirement, official source, document held, missing action and next review date. Keep originals in a secure folder. Use a redacted checklist when discussing readiness with a recruiter; do not publish passport scans, test references or immigration decisions in a public portfolio. For role-specific presentation, try the free ATS CV scan or explore HumanValue CV services. These services help you present experience; they do not make immigration decisions.
